On 2nd April 2025, the Indian Parliament held an important session in the Lok Sabha to discuss and pass the Waqf (Amendment) Bill 2025. The bill began at 11 am and 8 hours of debate was scheduled for it, which could be extended if needed.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah put forth his views on the bill and said that the law of the country has to be accepted by all. He accused the opposition of spreading fear for vote-bank politics. On the other hand, opposition parties, especially the INDIA block, opposed the bill. NCP (Sharadchandra Pawar) leader Jitendra Awhad said that the government should not interfere in matters of faith, while People's Conference chairman Sajad Gani Lone called it an intervention on the properties of the Muslim community.

Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju claimed that if the amendment had not been brought in earlier, properties like the Parliament House could have been claimed by the Waqf. The opposition called it unconstitutional and divisive, but with the NDA having a majority (272 MPs) in the Lok Sabha, its chances of passing are considered strong.


There was a heated debate throughout the day, and there were some lighter moments too, like when Akhilesh Yadav said something that made Amit Shah laugh out loud. The session is still on, and it remains to be seen whether the bill is passed today or not.

After this, Amit Shah stood up and jokingly said that you people have to decide within your family to choose the president whereas we have to choose one from the 13 crore members of our India.
